Orthodontics

In addition to a beautiful smile, orthodontic therapy also contributes to a more harmonious facial profile and proper chewing. In addition to appearance, speech and the ability to clean are improved, which also reduces the possibility of cavities.
Orthodontics deals with the prevention, diagnosis and correction of improperly positioned teeth and surrounding structures. There is no age limit for orthodontic therapy, but treatments in adults last longer than in children. Children should come for an examination by an orthodontist at the age of six, after the first permanent teeth erupt. Also, it would be a good idea to perform an examination in some of the following cases: tilted teeth, premature loss of milk teeth, prolonged finger sucking or some other inappropriate habit, in case of speech difficulties, problems chewing or closing the mouth.
In general, the ideal age for orthodontic dental treatment in children is from 9 to 14 years old. After the orthodontist performs diagnostic examinations and makes an orthodontic therapy plan, he recommends the type of appliance to the patient. Orthodontic examinations must be performed periodically due to the growth and development of the child and the constant changes that take place at that age, especially if the child wears orthodontic appliances.

Therapeutic options in adolescent children are greater than in patients who have finished growing. However, it is also possible to orthodontically straighten the teeth in adult patients, but not the surrounding structures – this is only possible with surgical procedures.
Fixed orthodontic therapies can be distinguished by the type of brackets – classic metal or transparent brackets. Classic braces with metal brackets are the most common type of orthodontic therapy and one of the most effective braces. However, some patients want braces that are visually less conspicuous, so they opt for transparent braces on braces.

When should the first orthodontic check-up be done?
Children should come for a check-up with an orthodontist at the earliest at the age of six, more precisely after the first permanent teeth erupt.
The reasons why you should contact an orthodontist are: tilted teeth, premature loss of milk teeth, prolonged finger sucking or some other undesirable habit, speech difficulties, chewing problems or closing the mouth.
How long does orthodontic therapy last?
The length of therapy depends on various factors and lasts approximately two years for fixed orthodontic therapy, and from 6 to 18 months for the Invisalign system. Check-ups are every two to three months, and after the end of the therapy, the so-called retention devices are worn. They keep the teeth in a fixed position, that is, they prevent them from moving again.
How much does dental braces for children cost?
When parents are preparing to provide their child with orthodontic therapy, questions inevitably arise such as: how long does the orthodontic appliance last, what type of braces is good for children, is wearing braces painful, how long will the child have to wear braces, and the like.
The duration of therapy, and therefore the wearing of dental braces, is determined by the orthodontist and depends on various factors. It is impossible to give unique answers. It is very important that parents adhere to the recommendations and advice of the dentist on hygiene and that they take care of regular check-ups to monitor the course of therapy.
The price of braces is mostly the same for both children and adults. However, in children, part or all of the amount of the installation and cost of fixed braces can be covered by health insurance, i.e. through the Croatian Health Insurance Fund.
How much does an adult brace cost?
It is not possible to determine the exact cost of the installation of a dental appliance in adults in advance, since it depends on several factors. First of all, the price of orthodontic therapy is determined based on the complexity of the case, so the exact amount will be known after a clinical examination, making an orthodontic image and study models, and a detailed orthodontic analysis.
Also, adults often have the opportunity to choose various types of orthodontic braces (e.g. because of better aesthetics), which also affects the final price.
Does fixed braces have to be metal?
No, fixed braces do not have to be entirely metal. Thus, the brackets can be ceramic, almost invisible, and the ligatures (rubber bands that connect the wire and the bracket) can be in different colours.
The wire can also be white, so the whole brace becomes aesthetically very acceptable.
